A Guide to Obtaining Free Use of Copyrighted Music
for Non-profit Videos

1) Purchase the CD and determine which agency (ASCAP, BMI or other) holds the copyright.

2) Contact the agency and/or publisher by fax or email.

3) Give them a brief synopsis of the project and indicate how much of the music will be used.

4) List the title of the CD, artist, and name of the song you want to use.

5) List your client's name.

6) Give the length of the video and its title.

7) State that your video is not for broadcast.

8) State how the video will be used (for example: internal corporate, community organization, general public, etc.)

9) State how many copies you intend to reproduce.

10) State that the video will not be for sale.

11) Indicate the duration of usage (for example: a one time presentation, six months, one year, etc.)

12) Provide acknowledgement in the credits if possible.

13) Offer to send a copy of the finished project so they can see exactly how the song was used.

14) Help locating publishers and record companies is available at www.bmi.com, along with licensing information. You should contact both the publisher and record company via fax.
